SHAKEDOWN – (AN INTERACTIVE WORKSHOP EXPLORING THE TOBACCO INDUSTRY AND ITS EFFECT ON YOUNG PEOPLE)

Shakedown is an interactive workshop aimed at year 8 pupils, using drama-based methods to explore personal and social issues surrounding the tobacco industry and other influences on young people’s smoking. The Hearty Lives Blaenau Gwent project developed the intervention in partnership with a range of stakeholders, and this joint working was critical to the success of the project.

Schools and other professionals such as School Health Nursing and Healthy Schools joined a consultative group which helped identify gaps in tobacco education and provided quality assurance for the final product. Pupils were a central part of the 8 week development process, shaping the form and content of the workshop.

Shakedown was developed by Theatre in Education specialists, and this creative form was underpinned by Public Health theory and evidence. The partnership working between all these different agencies resulted in a high quality, engaging intervention. Liz initiated and developed Shakedown as part of her work with British Heart Foundation’s Hearty Lives Project. She would like to use this model to create new health based projects with Rareseed Theatre. For further information and a Guide to Commissioning Shakedown please contact Liz at  liz@rareseedtheatre.co.uk.
